Play With a Purpose

When Gyms For Dogs founder John Sarver began working closely with shelter clients, he quickly realized their needs were fundamentally different from those of traditional dog parks. That insight sparked the creation of Shelter Strong, a program offering free facility design services and purpose-built equipment tailored specifically for shelters and kennels.

“Their needs differ from those of traditional dog parks,” Sarver said. “We worked to understand those differences and adapt our designs accordingly.”

The result is an initiative that reduces kennel stress, encourages healthy socialization and helps dogs release pent-up energy — benefiting both animals and the facilities that care for them.

At its core, the program provides thoughtfully designed play, agility, training and rehabilitation equipment specifically suited for dogs living in kennel settings. By incorporating features like ramps, platforms, tunnels and other interactive structures, Shelter Strong spaces give dogs safe, stimulating opportunities to move, explore and engage with people and other dogs beyond the confines of traditional kennel runs.

This enrichment not only helps reduce stress and fearfulness but also allows dogs to showcase their personalities, energy
levels, and trainability in ways that are often difficult to observe in high-stress, noisy shelter environments.

“Shelters have shared that dogs using Shelter Strong equipment are more confident, more relaxed and more open with
their personalities when meeting potential adopters,” Sarver said. “Play and socialization also support cardiovascular conditioning, mental stimulation, neuromuscular development, and healthy social interactions with both dogs and humans. These benefits help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and contribute to overall health and wellness. Our equipment is designed to challenge dogs physically and mentally while ensuring they have fun in the process.”

Funding for Shelter Strong installations varies by facility. “Many shelters rely on grants and donations, and we proudly offer special discounts to shelters, sanctuaries and kennels,” Sarver said. “The program continues to grow, and we look forward to helping even more facilities enrich the lives of the dogs in their care.”
