Upgrading the Humble Foot Bath

Nearly every dairy producer has a foot bath, but not every operation uses it to their best advantage when fighting lameness issues. Now, accessible and reliable advances in automation technology have made it easier than ever before to reduce lameness issues with less labor and better animal welfare.

“As we’ve talked to producers, almost everyone can experience improvements — even those who were satisfied with their trim losses and health outcomes,” noted Matt Meyer, vice president of sales and service with Specialty Herd Solutions. “Modern footbaths available today can offer precision dosing, better employee safety and improved health outcomes for operations.”

The big picture of lameness

Cows in the milking herd need to make at least two trips to the parlor a day, which makes easy movement a requirement. It’s estimated that each case of lameness costs approximately $336.91 in lost milk production, treatment of lameness, reduced reproductive performance and increased culling. This cost goes up $13.26 for each additional week a cow is lame beyond the first signs of clinical lameness, according to Ohio State University.

Hoof trimming, barn hygiene and regular use of a footbath (more accurately, a hoof bath) will help prevent infection by common lameness-causing agents. A traditional footbath is simple technology: cows walk through a shallow, waterproof reservoir on their way to, or from, the milking parlor. The footbath is filled with a solution that helps disinfect the hoof and control lameness-causing organisms.

Reducing lameness incidence

Footbaths work best when producers are proactive and consistent. That means checking footbath pH, monitoring solution concentrations, maintaining a consistent depth and achieving good cow flow through the bath itself.

As a rule, each cow should take at least two steps in the footbath per hoof. Depth of the solution is important, too. Heel warts can be around four inches from the ground, so it is important the depth of the bath be at least four inches as well. Cows need both adequate footbath length and depth to receive sufficient exposure to the solution, Meyer explained.

“All that sounds like extra work, but advancements in technology can help automate many of these processes, leading to reduced labor while experiencing better hoof health,” he said. “Using the industry standard of a hairy heel wart incidence between five to seven percent means there is almost always room to improve. Even a drop of 2% would equal a significant economic advantage in reduced lameness and treatment costs.”

A modern, automated system can continually provide a consistent depth of liquid and chemical concentration to help ensure the last cow through the footbath receives the same treatment as the first cow. Plus, some systems communicate to the manufacturer for management like refilling the chemical solution tank. This eliminates footbath supervision from the list of farm tasks.

The solution matters

Producers typically use a solution including copper sulfate or acidified copper. Again, this is an area that can often be mishandled on the farm.

Copper sulfate typically comes to the farm in bags, which are dumped into the footbath and mixed. Some bagged copper products can settle if the powder isn’t thoroughly mixed with water, leaving large undissolved clumps in the footbath. Uneven distribution in the solution can inhibit the binding process. In addition, some chemicals require employees to put on protective equipment, making the task even more cumbersome.

“Acidified copper can help lower the pH and make metals more readily available and active for a longer period,” Meyer noted. “We analyzed the amount of copper left in process water when customers use acidified liquid copper for one day. Then, we measured again after one week. The results verified the solution was still in the beneficial range for cows.”

The labor problem

Footbaths are most effective when the water is changed frequently. A traditional copper sulfate solution in a footbath generally does not last through 2,000 cows. The water’s pH and/or concentration can get out of balance. It’s necessary to stop, change the solution and make sure the pH, depth and concentration are in order.

Inevitably, managing the footbath gets pushed to the bottom of the task list on the farm, Meyer explained. That’s why many dairies are turning to automation. Today, automated footbaths are available for every size and scale of operation.

“It helps remove the human element in footbath management, which can provide returns in reduced trim losses, improved hoof health and labor savings,” he said. “Footbath automation suppliers also can handle chemical inventory management, which is a bonus for both employee safety and time. Automation improves consistency and has helped many dairy farms achieve hairy heel wart incidence rates of as low as 3%.”

Automation isn’t just for large dairies. Meyer said custom installation and modern equipment can help dairies as small as 100 to 150 cows.

“The fact is that footbaths depend on proper cow flow and solid construction. An old footbath that’s chipped may hurt hoof health. Stepping on rocks and aggregate from damaged concrete can cause bruising and damage health and mobility,” he said. “It’s worth it to consider upgrading, and modern options are more attainable than you may think.”
