By the Numbers: U.S. Pet Industry Reaches $158 Billion, Growth Expected to Continue in 2026
New APPA data highlights steady spending, rising ownership across generations and shifting consumer priorities toward essential pet care.

Pet industry expenditures reached $158 billion in 2025.
This represents a 3.7% increase from the previous year, according to the State of the Industry Report released this spring by the American Pet Products Association (APPA).
Two or More
Multi-pet households continue to represent a highly engaged and stable segment. In 2025, multi-pet ownership grew by 3% and has remained relatively consistent over time, with Gen Z and millennials most likely to own two or more pets.

For 2026, APPA is projecting pet industry expenditures to increase nearly 4.4%, or $165 billion.
95 million
An estimated 95 million U.S. households own at least one pet. In 2010, the estimated number was 73 million.
$68.3 Billion
Of the pet industry categories, food and treats remained the largest, with $68.3 billion in expenditure. Veterinary care expenditure was reported to be $41 billion.

Value-seeking among pet owners is on the rise. Approximately 22% of pet owners noted they spent less on their pets in 2025 (a 10% increase from 2024), APPA reported.
